Simplifying Access to High-Quality Biospecimens for Research
Simplifying Access to High-Quality Biospecimens for Research
At BioGrad, we understand the complexities and challenges involved in sourcing high-quality biospecimens for research. We simplify this process by offering access to a diverse range of human samples, supported by comprehensive donor information across a broad demographic.
Global Access & Broad Consent Model
Through our broad consent model, BioGrad offers global access to samples within our Research Tissue Bank. Researchers who already hold local ethical and regulatory approvals for the use and storage of human tissue can access these samples directly through our commercial distribution channels.
Our Research Program
At BioGrad, we specifically support UK researchers focused on advancing women’s health, cell-based therapies, and related disease research. We offer the option to extend NHS ethical approval to your project, alongside access to our samples and data of interest. Applications are reviewed monthly by our Internal Ethics Committee.
Next Meeting Date: Last Friday of each month
Note: BioGrad’s Internal Ethics Committee does not hold regular meetings in December. Out-of-schedule meetings can be requested via our contact page.
Our regulatory-compliant biorepository consists of a variety of samples including, but not limited to the following types:
- Breast Milk
- Lochia, Bleeding Following Birth
- Menstrual Blood
- Peripheral Blood
- Rectal or Stoma Swabs
- Saliva
- Throat & Nasal Swabs
- Urine
- Vaginal Swab
We work closely with trusted clinical partners to provide specialized samples, including:
- Birthing Material: Umbilical cord blood, umbilical cord tissue, placenta, and amniotic fluid
- Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
- Blood Samples via Leukapheresis
- Surplus Tissue Following Surgery
- Surplus Tissue Following a Biopsy
- Teeth (Molar Teeth and Wisdom Teeth)
- Post Menopausal Vaginal Bleeding
Ethical and Legal Considerations
BioGrad samples are intended for academic or commercial biomedical research, including the development of research questions, assays, test kits, and medical devices. They can also be used for commercial product testing, training, or quality assurance purposes. However, they cannot be used for human treatment, reproductive cloning, or any use prohibited by law.
Our broad consent framework includes provisions for genetic testing of samples, with optional consent for the use of samples in animal research. If your project requires animal research consent, please contact our team to ensure full compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions: Donations
Yes. If you are planning to apply for separate ethical approval, we can work with you to provide prospective collection services tailored to your needs.
If you are requesting access to samples through our ethical approval scheme, you can select from the list of ethically approved samples available on our website.
Our Research Tissue Bank collects samples from a broad spectrum of the population, with no specific focus on diseases or conditions. However, we can offer targeted collection services based on your specific needs. Please contact our team to discuss your requirements.
Yes. BioGrad provides in-house sample processing and routinely prepares serum, plasma, and PBMCs from peripheral, menstrual, or cord blood. We can also process samples further to extract DNA or RNA upon request.
If your project requires specialised testing or additional processing, please speak to our team. We may accommodate your needs in-house or through our trusted local laboratory partnerships.
All samples come with minimal information, including age, gender, and ethnicity as standard.
We can also provide extensive health and lifestyle data from donors, including but not limited to:
- Medical conditions, including family history.
- Medications and vaccinations.
- Smoking habits, diet, and sleep behaviour.
We are continually reviewing and expanding the range of sample-associated data we collect.
Yes. In partnership with local clinical laboratories, we test blood donors for bloodborne viruses, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV. Certificates of analysis can be provided upon request for your peace of mind.
In the UK, research involving human samples typically requires ethical approval from a recognised body. However, if the samples are obtained from a REC-approved Research Tissue Bank, such as BioGrad, your project can usually proceed without requiring a separate ethics application via IRAS. This can save significant time and administrative effort, allowing you to focus on your research.
BioGrad’s ethical approval scheme supports projects focused on women’s health and cell therapy-related research. If you are unsure if your project falls within this scope, please contact us with a brief synopsis of your project. Our team will provide an initial recommendation. If your project falls outside our ethical approval scheme, you can still obtain samples but will need to apply for separate ethical approval before proceeding.
No, BioGrad’s ethical approval as a Research Tissue Bank allows access to pre-existing samples and targeted collection services only. We do not hold ethical approval to conduct donor interventions as part of research studies.
However, BioGrad offers separate clinical trial services for in vitro diagnostics (IVDs) and can facilitate connections with relevant academic and industry partners for other types of clinical trial work.
Yes. BioGrad has ethical approval to re-contact donors for additional data collection and future sample donations. This enables us to provide longitudinal samples where possible. However, we cannot guarantee donor participation over time.
The process begins with completing a simple sample access request form and submitting associated documentation. Once submitted, our internal ethics committee reviews requests during their monthly meetings. Decisions are typically communicated within 7 days.
If your request is approved under BioGrad’s ethical approval scheme, we will send you a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA). This document outlines your responsibilities regarding the use of samples and data. Once we receive your signed MTA, we will arrange for the transfer of your requested samples and data.
If you already hold the necessary ethical approvals or plan to secure them independently, you can access samples through BioGrad outside of our ethical approval scheme. Please contact our team to discuss your specific requirements. We will provide you with a quotation and our terms and conditions, which detail the permitted use of our samples and associated data. Once these terms are agreed upon, we will arrange the transfer of the requested samples.
Costs depend on factors such as:
- Sample type.
- Quantity of samples requested.
- Sample-associated data required.
- Tailored collection or processing services.
Contact our commercial team for a personalised quotation based on your project’s requirements.
Yes. Freshly collected samples can be shipped on the same day as collection. Stored samples are typically shipped within 5 days of order confirmation. Delivery times will vary depending on your location.
